The Greats Come A-Callin'

Lisa says:

The Great Aunts really existed, as did Addie Mae.

(2007) Appears in The Fantasy Magazine Anthology (from Prime Books)

Reviews:

A most unusual inheritance and a matriarchal family make this story entertaining, as well as an interesting reflection on family relationships. And the art world.

I have enjoyed everything I've read of Mantchev's this year, she has really become one of my "writers to watch" and I just love love LOVED this story... Any story featuring vintage lace and a glue gun is just kind of built for me, but it doesn't just hit my personal kinks - it's beautifully written, too.

Excerpt:

"Not one of those new-fangled electric monstrosities," Great Great Aunt Mabel said from the depths of my handbag, somewhere between the Tic Tacs and a dry cleaning receipt.  "A treadle is the only way to go if you want to have any control over your fabric."

"But I don't want a sewing machine."  I hitched my purse up my arm, fighting the weight of the brick inside.  "I don't need it and I don't have room for it.  I don't know how to sew, for Christ's sake, much less on a rusty old Singer."

"Don't take the name of the Lord in vain, my miss."  That was my Great Great Grandmother Addie Mae, but I wasn't having any of her sass.

"Oh please.  We're Methodists.  That's like Presbyterian Lite."  I backed out of the fabric store wondering where the heck I was going to find a treadle sewing machine.  "Why couldn't Meemaw have sent me a freaking knickknack instead of all y'all?"
