In the vicinity of Lille, France, 1920
The midday sun stretched her arms in all directions with a lazy yawn. After a feast of leftover moonlight and stolen sips of dandelion wine, the promise of a long afternoon stretched out before her with skirts of gold net.
The hems of gentle light swept over the scars of war and the healing landscape. The sun coaxed the grass to grow over the graves. Vines tumbled into the trenches where the blood of thousands had pooled; the poppies were already in bloom, but none of the village children would pick them.
The souls of the dead do not a sweet bouquet make...
